comments
The scene has moved to the room where the Last Supper is being celebrated. The one who has gone out is obviously Judas. This scene is being recalled by the priest (in a low voice) in the context of the Mass being celebrated in the poem. Hence the word ‘as’ is emphatic because it points out an important relationship: the current act is a representation of the former act.
