DJ also painted a picture with the same title.

^b According to Hague (p. 41), DJ wanted the two sounds hautes and heights, but did not want any suggestion of the Alps or Switzerland; rather, he was thinking of the Pyrenees.

^c Lambourn Down is a large bronze age settlement on the Ridgeway in Berkshire.

^d Bredon Hill, in Worcestershire, is topped by an iron age fort. There are also Roman earthworks and a number of ancient standing stones on the hill.

^e ‘that was an attempt to reinforce the allusion to the Germanic association of the adjacent words “stress” and “drag”, “Sturm und Drang” and (p. 58) “storm-darkt sea” . . . I wanted to hold the reader up slightly on that word. I wanted a word that had a more positive sound than “and” as usually pronounced in English.’ (DJ, quoted in Hague p. 45.)
