The Anathemata

Rite and Fore-time (continued)

Twenty millennia (and what millennia more?)

since he became

man master-of-plastic.1

David Jones notes

1 The first examples of visual art so far (1940) discovered date from about 20,000 BC. There is evidence of artefacture, of a sort, twenty thousand and more years earlier still, e.g. flints and marked stones, but these are hardly ‘visual art’ in the accepted sense.

additional notes

‘plastic’ is here used in the general sense of something that is capable of being moulded or given form to.
