David Jones notes
2 Three linen cloths, one over the other, are used to dress a Christian altar. During the action of the Mass a further piece of linen is spread centrally and on this the chalice and paten are placed. Cf. the older method of covering the chalice with part of this linen cloth (corporal), a use still followed by the Carthusians at Cowfold and I suppose by them elsewhere.
additional notes
a munera: offerings (of bread (Ceres), wine (Liber, see next page), water).
b as noted on the next page, Saxons are at this time burning the harvests on the east coast, hence the need for reserve stores.
