additional notes
b Homo heidelbergensis is an extinct species of the genus Homo which lived in Africa, Europe and western Asia during about 0.6 to 0.3 million years ago. It is thought that H. heidelbergensis might have been the first species of the Homo genus to bury its dead.
c The ‘girl from Lime Street’ refers to the ‘London skull’ found in 1925 when the foundations of the Lloyds building were excavated, between Leadenhall Street and Lime Street.
d The eight (? or more) Carmel fathers were found in 1931-2 in caves at the foot of Mount Carmel in Palestine. It is believed that these humans, with delicate facial features, a protruding chin and straight forehead, were fully developed around 100,000 years ago. The finds from these graves also show evidence of cult and rituals related to death and the spiritual realm.
