David Jones notes

1 Ammianus Marcellinus in describing various siege engines says ‘Now we come to the ram. A tall pine or a mountain-ash is selected.’ In the foregoing passage I envisage a developing armament. As with the other assault engines, the weight and mechanization of the ram increased. From being a simple length of timber carried by a number of men it appears to have become a contrivance swung from heavy supporting beams.
