8 I have supposed the Incarnation to have been in 5 BC or 4 BC that is AUC 749 or 750, and have followed the tradition that our Lord was in his thirty-third or thirty-fourth year at the time of his Passion.

a The German Arminius inflicted a defeat on the Romans under Varus in 9 CE (the battle of Teutoburg Forest, one of the most decisive battles in Roman history). This was revenged by Germanicus in 16 CE, so that ‘fourteen years since the recovery’ gives 30 CE.
